My Story
As President of Energy Nexus Solutions (ENS), Joe Risse oversees all aspects of the business and personally manages each project assignment. With over 35 years of experience, he has led large teams and numerous energy-related projects through feasibility, planning, design, and construction.
I grew up in beautiful Northeastern Pennsylvania, close to Scranton, which was made famous for anthracite coal and the hit TV series, The Office. Growing up in coal country helped me understand the importance of this historically significant energy resource, but I also experienced firsthand its devastating environmental impacts. I attended a local trade school, Johnson College, where I earned my degree in mechanical design, launching my energy career with Ingersoll Rand and Foster Wheeler.
Seeking change and challenge, I returned to college to earn my engineering degree at SUNY Binghamton. On graduation day, I answered an ad in a local newspaper looking for “energy engineers” for a company called Pyropower in sunny San Diego. I jumped at the chance and then traveled the world developing “clean coal” power projects. Along the way, I earned my master’s degree from West Coast University, which broadened my career opportunities and curiosity. After finishing a large project in Poland, I was eager to return to San Diego. So, with two children in tow, my wife and I moved back to San Diego, where I accepted a position with Sempra Energy.
Sempra was an amazing and life-changing opportunity. I had the chance to work with and lead incredible people developing combined cycle projects, LNG/FLNG plants, utility-scale solar, wind, and storage projects, plus cutting-edge net-zero initiatives including ammonia, hydrogen, and carbon sequestration. After 24 amazing years, I retired from Sempra and started my own company, Energy Nexus Solutions.
ENS has not disappointed. Starting my own company has enabled me to pursue new opportunities and apply my knowledge to fresh challenges. I also have more time to time with my amazing family and friends, traveling, and indulging in hobbies like fishing, yoga, travel and brewing beer!
Those of you who know me know that I make a pretty good homebrew, so keep an eye out on this page for more updates!

What’s On Tap!
Those who know me well have tasted Joe’s Home Brew, and most of you come back for more! Brewing beer is a fantastic hobby—one that would make my chemistry teacher proud and, more importantly, one that you can share with others. While I’m far from an expert brewer, I improve with every batch. Plus, I enjoy trading beer for fresh-caught tuna!
Currently, I’m serving a tasty and chocolaty English-style Porter and a crisp and clear Czech-style Pilsner. Both were cold fermented and cold lagered for four months before tapping. No complaints yet!
I’m also brewing a German-style Pilsner I’m calling “October’s Best”, specially made for an Oktoberfest celebration at a friend’s house. He’s preparing homemade German-style sausages and sauerkraut, so the pressure is on to deliver a tasty brew to share with friends!
